Another child got his way

Another moving story unfolded in our shelters. Another child got his way.

In social worker’s words:

” It is common for us to farewell every child who leaves for his destination. But today was special. You will tell me oh come on…., you say the same thing every time. You are right. Every separation is special and difficult and every time I say the same. But on Saturday morning when I escort the child for the PCR test we had a discussion in the car, which we repeated today at the airport. I asked him to tell me honestly how he feels about his departure. His answer was: You know …., It was very difficult to leave my family in my homeland and embark on a journey completely unknown to me. I consciously chose to go to my uncle in Germany, because he is the only family I have in Europe and he is a very good person.

But it is difficult for me because I leave behind me, here in Greece another family, very special. Because that is what we are in the shelter, a big and special family. And our shelter is our home, a little different but always our home. So I feel very strange and peculiar.

He told me that he would like to change his ticket and departure later. He told me that his stomach is tight as he leaves us behind. That in 3 years when he grows up he will return to visit us because he already misses us.

.., We will miss you very much. Continue to have big dreams for your life, because you deserve to leave behind everything you went through and to move forward, scattering around you the light that you have inside you. And as I told you today before you leave, keep smiling, people need your smile.”

PS: The photo from the airport was taken because the child wanted to have the last sunrise from Greece.
